it seems an odd time in life to be a fruit
or a vegetable. you once thought my soul
was royal purple. imagine my surprise
when you turned out to be so sour. i
watch the man behind the counter
slice up a thick banana for the
circle swirl atop my açai bowl.
today, i’m getting the hanna banana,
my usual—when i’m allowed a treat, which

miranda, either. not for lack of vocal ability,
i might add, but rather because the fruit keeps
falling off of my head. the vertigo is back.
and not just metaphorically.
